Though facial oil is0 an extra step to add to your daily skincare routine it is worth the try!
As we all know our skin produces a greasy substance which is known as sebum which maintains the oil balance of our skin. But as we age, this oil production decreases which leads to fine lines, dryness, wrinkles, etc. Also, using a facial oil according to your skin type helps to seal in the moisture and all the skincare products that you have applied.
And if you think you do not need one because you have oily skin then you are wrong! There are facial oils for acne and oily skin as well. It is very essential to keep your skin type in mind while choosing the right face oil for your skin type.
We have listed four groups of facial oil in India for the skin types: the oily skin, the sensitive skin, the dry skin and mature or aging skin type along with the need for the skin below each section. We are going to talk about the plant-derived facial oils which are rich in antioxidants, nutrition, and vitamins that will nourish and even heal the skin when applied by rebuilding and sustaining the skin’s outermost lipid barrier. - Tea tree oil:
Tea tree oil is great for oily skin and acne as it has antibacterial and antifungal properties that kill the bacteria in your pores. Here, I am not talking about the tea tree essential oil but the carrier oil. But, never use tea tree oil directly on your face as it might irritate the skin. Mix it with your moisturizer or serum send to apply to your face.
- Grapeseed Oil:
Grapeseed oil is another amazing oil if you have acne-prone skin as it is great for lowering skin inflammation and it can slightly dry your skin if you have very oily skin. Grapeseed oil has antimicrobial properties.
- Apricot seed oil:

The problems normally faced by sensitive skin types are redness, itching, stinging or tightness.
- Sea buckthorn Oil:
Seabuckthorn oil is an amazing ingredient that is found in many cosmetic products and creams. It is a smoothing and calming oil that is used to heal burnt skin and protects the skin from very harsh weather conditions. Sea buckthorn oil is loaded with antioxidants, omegas, vitamin e & c that helps to repair inflammation. It is one of the heavier moisturizer facial oils that is great if you have dry sensitive skin or suffers from severely dry patches on the skin during the winter season.
- Chia seed oil:
Chia seed is an amazing ingredient. It is a superfood for your skin. It contains 7 times more vitamin c of orange.
- Avocado Oil:
Avocado oil is actually extracted from the pulp of the avocado and not the seed. Just like sea buckthorn oil, this is a heavier oil and amazing for healing and treating dry, itchy, damaged and sensitive skin. Avocado oil also treats severe dry patches on the skin.
- Coconut oil:
Coconut oil is one of those oils which have been loved and used for centuries to heal damaged skin. Though coconut oil is fantastic for your skin, body, and hair, it is highly comedogenic. Be careful while putting coconut oil on your face if you are prone to breakouts.
Dry Skin Type:
It is very important to add extra hydration to a dry skincare routine especially in winter. The common problems faced by dry skin type are rough, scaly, chapped, dehydrated and flaking skin.
The facial oils for dry skin are high in oleic fatty acids which means they are richer and more occlusive. These skincare oils are really good at sealing moisture into the skin. The below facial oils can deliver more moisture to your skin can any of your potent night creams.
- Camellia oil:
An amazing facial oil for winter skincare routine especially if you have very dry skin. It is super rich in antioxidants. In Japanese skincare, this oil is called as Tsubaki oil.
- Olive oil:
Even though olive oil is fairly comedogenic oil (which means it will clog pores), it reacts amazingly for some people with dry skin. But if you are someone who is prone to break out, then stay away from olive oil. Since olive oil is very very rich, it works great for dry skin people.
- Sunflower Oil:
Sunflower oil is very very rich in vitamin e and helps in building a strong skin barrier. It also helps from environmental damage.
- Sweet Almond oil:
Sweet almond oil is another amazing oil for dry skin type because it is really moisturizing and also incredible good in cleaning out the pores. Sweet almond oil also helps with photosensitivity and reverses sun damage.
Mature/ Aging Skin:
Mature skin or aging skin is the one that lacks moisture and results in early signs of aging, fine lines, wrinkles, and dull skin. Hence, facial oils are of utmost importance in mature skin.
Mature skin type needs oils that are chock full of anti-aging antioxidants. Here are a few oils for the anti-aging skincare routine.
- Rosehip seed oil:
One of the best oil for mature skincare routine. Rosehip seed oil is a form of vitamin A and hence also known as nature’s Retina. Rosehip seed oil is well known for repairing sun-damaged skin which is the major cause of premature aging. It is good for treating hyperpigmentation, great for treating scars, stretch marks. This is a rejuvenation oil in itself.
- Jojoba oil:
Jojoba oil is mildly comedogenic oil and has sebum like consistency. Hence, it absorbs well into the skin.
- Argan oil:
Argan oil is from the fruit of the Morrocan tree and is very moisturizing for hair and skin. It is very rich in vitamin e and helps with new cell growth and new cell turnover which decreases as we age. It also helps to store the lipid barrier of the skin. Even though argan oil is known to be noncomedogenic, this is very high in oleic fatty acids, hence it could be a problem if you have rosacea, prone to breakouts, or dermatitis.
- Marula Oil:
Marula oil is obtained from the fruit of the marula tree found in South Africa. This oil is a powerhouse of antioxidants and contains more antioxidants than argan oil. This oil is a little thick but absorbs very well into the skin and really nourishes your skin.
Note: Do not fall for oils which are extremely cheap because they are either over-processed or adulterated with cheap fillers. Make sure the oils that you buy are either organic or cold-pressed to maintain the nutritional value.
How to use Facial oil:
- Always apply a facial oil before moisturizer, as the moisturizer seals everything into the skin and the facial oil really sinks well into the moisturizer.
- Do not rub the oil or basically any skincare product into the skin, just press it gently. Make a habit of pressing the oil into the skin for better absorption.
- You can also mix the oil with the moisturizer.
- You can also mix the oil in the foundation so it glides well on your face.
